There was an odd sort of calm that fell over Ava every time she did yoga. Her feelings at the end of chavasana were always differentâhappy it was finally over, or she had the energy to do moreâbut the sense of calm was always there. Her body had been stretched out, energy had been expelled. Peace reigned, even if only for twenty minutes a day.
âAva.â
Maybe not today, though.
âAva!â
âGabbie. I am feeling the effects of my practice,â Ava said slowly and in a low voice, her eyes still closed, her body in repose on her yoga mat, soles of her feet together.
It was the next morning, and she and Gabbie were in a large, open pavilion with thatched roofing and treated wood floors, surrounded by tropical plants and the cool mist of a morning rain. Their teacher had walked off to give them some time to âreflect on your affirmation for today,â and to fetch some massage balm. It was nice. And the poses had definitely helped soothe the soreness along Avaâs body from the plane ride.
The plane ride and sex. With Scott.
Ava wanted to laugh. Her body was sore from sex. Those butterfly forward folds? Soooo good for her muscles. Good decisions were made last night.
âAva, I can see you trying not to laugh. Notice me, please.â
âWhat do you want.â
âYou sound like my Mom when I used to ask for baon in the morning.â Gabbie giggled, sitting up and crossing her legs. âBut I thought we needed to talk.â
âAbout?â Ava asked, the instinct to defend herself rising up quick and fierce. âScott?â
âNo, oh no. Not that. I mean Iâm upset you didnât tell us it was going on, but of course, the two of you make perfect sense.â
Ava ignored the little twist of guilt in her stomach.
âThis is about Matteo, and what happened at the party. I thought he was perfect for you.â Gabbie huffed, and Ava could imagine her friend crossing her arms over her chest. âHe said you were not particularly nice to himââ
âAnd he said to my face that I was too fat for him.â Ava said, opening her eyes this time. Even as she said it out loud, the words still hurt her. Funny thing about having confidence, and owning your powerâyou still hurt. It was your ability to not let the words cut you too deep that made you better. âThat was years ago. The night of your party he said that for your sake I should try to be less bitter.â
âHe said that? What the fuck!â Gabbie gasped. âFuck I am so sorry, Ava. I thought he was a good guy, but I didnâtââ
âItâs okay.â Ava said, and that, she truly believed. Words disappeared when spoken. They had power, but she didnât let them take hers. Stings faded. Gabbie was still her friend. âYou made a mistake. Itâs okay.â
âIn my defense, I just wanted my friends to have what I have, you know?â
âI know.â Ava nodded. Gabbieâs boundless generosity came at a fault sometimes.
âI
